What does it mean to obtain economical stability as an artist of colour?

Statistically paintings are still the most and best sold art object and therefore the most successful in the sector of private money and commerce. A recent article published by big capital corporation Deloitte states art should be seen as asset class meaning it should be considered amongst categories such as real estate for investors. But what if your artistic practice is not at all about paintings and not even about selling actually?

Here, I use the medium of painting as a strategy to explore the idea of becoming sellable. The color palettes are bootlegged versions of those used by Vermeer and De Kooning. Whilst the image resembles a classical scene of men that is to be found in many 17th century paintings, it actually refers to a family photograph taken in pre-independence Surinam. By layering the two aesthetic elements I reflect on what it means to be considered a Dutch master.
