Biography

Naphysa (b. 2000) constructs video installations, texts, costumes and photo collages as an ever-morphing bridge between reality and the escape from it. Pulling reference from afro-futuristic science-fiction narrations and cosmic landscapes, her world explores the tension between the ethereal fantasy of the dream and the brutal violence of the present.

remember the travel of light

Video, music, silk, steel, wax, plastic, silicon 400 x 400 x 350 cm A cosmic dream brought to life, the story of self discovery, haunted by horrors, delusions and lies. Through an immersive multimedia installation, with a cosmic journey at its core, this piece touches on the ambivalence of escapism and the uncertainty of cultural resistance under the surveillance and control of systems of oppression like capitalism and white supremacy. This story explore how the creatives forces that allow us, even partially, to exist outside of the system, are often, over time, repurposed as tools of its cultural hegemony. The dream-like symbolic, almost cryptic narration of the story, explores the tensions and links between invisibilized marginalized communities, cultural appropriation and also the control and fabrication of our fantasies and dreams by these oppressive structures that seek to pacify and numb us. The light that reaches our eyes is often beautiful and warm but it is never empty, to remember its travel is to remember the connection flowing between all of us.
