Buying Sugar in Tons

In 1878, architect Edvard Potter compared New York’s housing market to buying sugar in tons. Subdivision of houses and tenant ownership was his solution to the illness of speculation. As prices and rents increase, young adults are thrown between sublets trying to settle. With a column in tension, floorplans can be hacked to cope with these temporary living conditions, like owning sugar in grams.
