Visa (MVV)
To study in The Netherlands you need to have a legal status. This means that you cannot enter The Netherlands on a tourist visa, but that you will have to apply for a provisional residence permit, the MVV visa. This MVV-visa is only required for students from certain foreign countries.
The countries that do not need the MVV visa are:
-
All EU/EEA countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. - Canada
- Japan
- New Zealand
- South Korea
- United States of America
Students from the above mentioned countries can apply for their residence permit immediately upon arrival in The Netherlands, but before September 1st, which is the official start date of the academic year.
All students from countries NOT listed above are required to already have the MVV visa before entering The Netherlands to start their studies, and before September 1st, which is the official start date of the academic year.
As soon as you are accepted by the Sandberg Instituut you will be notified that you can take the following steps that are necessary to obtain a MVV.
It is only possible to apply for the MVV through the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. We will provide a login code with which you can start the application.
The costs for the MVV Visa are 300 euro and 15 euro administration fee. Please transfer this amount to the account of the Rietveld Academie. We will start your application after receiving the fee.
During the application procedure for the MVV visa you are not allowed to be in The Netherlands. After your arrival in The Netherlands we will take care of the application for the residence permit.
The Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country will contact you as soon as the approval for the MVV has arrived. While picking up the MVV, ask for a combined visa (D and C visa: MVV and tourist visa as well). This will give you the opportunity of multiple entry, which means you are allowed to pass the Dutch border several times. You will need this to take part in excursions abroad during the application procedure for the residence permit. The costs for a tourist visa are 35 euro.
PLEASE NOTE:
The process for an MVV visa can take up to 1 month, so you have to submit your request as early as possible. The Dutch Immigration Office (IND) will reject requests for a residence permit from anyone who has entered The Netherlands without an MVV visa.
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie cannot register you as a student without a residence permit.
Students arriving in The Netherlands after the official start date of the academic year, which is September 1st, cannot be registered!
