who you gonna call

Graduation events of the Masters of Design students of the Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam, at the former Filmmuseum in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam, from July 11 – 15, 2012.

It’s a great pleasure to introduce to you the graduation events of the Design Department of the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam – a think tank for visual strategies where designers commit themselves to various cultural, political and research-based projects. This year’s graduation exhibition tells a story of ghosts, spectres and chimeras. It is set in an abandoned building in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark. Once known as the House of Illusions, this empty pavilion now serves as temporary accommodation for a group of six ghost hunters. As the spirits of dead film stars haunt the cellar, the ghost hunters take aim at a number of contemporary myths on the first floor.

They are the six talented final-year students of the Sandberg Institute: Noortje van Eekelen (NL), Guido Giglio (BR), Seungyong Moon (KR), Ruben Pater (NL), Stefan Schäfer (DE), Yuri Veerman (NL)

From the 11th to the 15th of July 2012, these six Masters of Design, together with ten first-year master students, will take up residence in Amsterdam’s former Filmmuseum. They will take visitors on a journey through a number of prominent contemporary societal developments: the crisis in Europe, global economic power relations, the influence of digital networks, the myth of the free market (who said there were no grand narratives anymore?). With intellectual precision, these designers cleverly tear down a number of contemporary illusions.

The exhibition is playfully titled Who You Gonna Call?, in a nod to the idea of designers as problem-solvers. The Sandberg Instituut’s designers are not under the illusion that design can make the world a better place, but they do believe their designer’s eye allows them to help people understand social trends and to draw meaningful connections within those trends.

We’re looking forward to welcome you!

Nina Folkersma, Jan Kees van Kampen, Rob Schröder, Daniel van der Velden, Anke van Loon and Annelys de Vet

The Institute of Dirty Horticulture

From 11 until 15 July, "The Institute of Dirty Horticulture" will inhabit the Hortus Botanicus of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, serving as a backdrop, subject and support structure for the work of Netta Bacon (1980, IS), Marc Barreda (1977, US), Lyske Gais (1984, NL), Matthias Dolder (1979, CH), Kees Klaassen (1986, NL), Aliki van der Kruijs (1984, NL), Charley Reijnders (1988, NL), Wonjung Shin (1981, KOR) and Anna Brecht Veenstra (1980, NL).

Since 2010, the students of the Dirty Art Department a.k.a. The Applied Art Department of Sandberg Institute have been committed to creating, investigating and experimenting by means of science, technology, sociology, art, craft, design and more. Cross-pollination is their middle name. With a keen eye, conceptual and practical skills and a never-ending fascination for their surroundings, they collectively and temporarily form The Institute of Dirty Horticulture, which is geared towards tackling and raising questions in a variety of forms and on many scales. For five days, The Institute infiltrates and transforms the Hortus Botanicus by introducing a multitude of works, reflections, experiences and events.

A dynamic public programme with daily events will look closely at The Institute of Dirty Horticulture. What does The Institute represent or enact? What role do its members take on? What sets them apart? How can their practice be applied? Each day will shine a different light on the exhibition while testing the boundaries, intricacies and visions of the works on show. For more information and updates, please visit the Facebook page.

Ever been to a botanical garden party? Be sure to join us for the festive opening on 11 July at 17.00!

The Institute of Dirty Horticulture, graduation show of The Dirty Art Department a.k.a. The Applied Art Department, Sandberg Institute, is set up in collaboration with a curatorial team: Victoria Anastasyadis (1985, NL) design historian, Sanne Oorthuizen (1984, NL) independent curator and Jet Vermaning (1983, NL) art consultant.
