Press release: exhibition "one; & the other painting"
(question & comment: hihitim(a)gmail.com; NO SPAM!) Project W139/basement at the Post CS building Amsterdam In cooperation with Marc Schoneveld and Tony Hofman W139 stages an experimental project named W139/BASEMENT at its former exhibition space, the Post CS building in Amsterdam [map], from March 2007 until June 2007. Sandberg Institute project W139/basement As a component of the project W139/BASEMENT, an exhibition is held by the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam with a space of width10m x length30m x height4m [click here for map] during 7 April 2007 - 29 April 2007. The opening takes place at 20:00pm on 7 April 2007. Chinese artist Tim Chen Chuanxi [CV], current fine arts teacher at Sandberg Institute, curates this project. General idea of the exhibition Basically, this exhibition is expected to be a painting/drawing show. Nevertheless a more outward orientation is strongly encouraged. What is painting? What is drawing? Before the time of paper and canvas did people paint or make drawing? And today in the time of new media, in which way and with what material how do we represent painting or drawing with a new meaning and form? How far can we push the border off the defined? Don't we have any new developing concept for painting and drawing? Or even just an urbane piece of old fashioned with contemporary input? However, in any way, in any shape or form, an excellent art exposition is ultimately expected. Therefore a free contention is more than welcome and art work of an enterprising practitioner is more wanted. Shortly, the general idea can be described as: "one, & the other painting". Proposal collecting According to the above general concept, a dozen of painters and drawing makers have been invited to take part in the project. And a more open invitation for proposals has been also distributed to more artists who would be probably interested and inspired. We have received so many proposals but only superior proposals are accepted. Because of the idiographic purpose of the exhibition, we have paid special attention on those artists who making painting/drawing in a more unique way. How well done a work is has become the secondary question. However we have tried to keep a good balance between quality and diversity. Finally 44 artists are selected. They are: Ad de Jong, Adonis Migkos, Andreas Templin, Anky van der Heijden, Berndnaut Smilde, Chen Wei, Chiaki Kamikawa, Eric Von Robertson & Yngve Holen, Hamid el Kanbouhi, Irina Birger, Jana van Meerveld, John Arnhem, Joost Bakker, Joost Halbertsma, Judith Leysner, Katharina Galland, Katrijn Schatteman, Klaar Valkhoff, Lotte Geeven, Maaike v/d Linden, Mannie Krak, Maria Zervou, Marinke Marcelis, Maurice van Daalen, Mees de Jong, Nadine Hottenrott, Richtje Reinsma, Rogier Roeters, Rossano | Leyendekker, Sandra Kunz, Sang Woo Kang, Sibylle Eimermacher, Simone Hooymans, Stevens Vaughn, Su Tomesen, Wouter Klein Velderman, Wypke Jannette Walen, Weina, Yang Zhifei, Yasser Ballemans, Anna Volkova and Min Lan. They are from different countries of different continents. This makes the exhibition really international. Artists and their works Ad de Jong is a sculptor. His work can be also considered as 3D drawing. With epoxy resin/fiberglass/pigments he ¡°start a new art world¡±. Fortunately Andreas Templin has been born in an open-minded time, otherwise he could be hanged on the cross of torture, though his paintings still have a classic form. With a video painting, Anky van der Heijden tells you a story of a painter who lives in a painting. Chiaki Kamikava makes drawing simply with pencil and paper but her works are more like time-based opera. Irina Birger has invented her own way of projecting by combining her classic made dawing with new media. Jana van Meerveld's painting looks pretty strange. John Arnhem, this tall boy almost never stops his mouth but he shuts up in his painting. Do you believe Joost Bakker can really move your eyeballs? Joost Halbertsma tried to find a good way to protect his ¡°old¡± T-shirt at the exhibition space. Judith Leysner is mostly a super fan of Japanese culture. She presents the harvest of her studies on the 48 positions of love. Katharina Galland works in a 3D space with different materials but her work is 120% 2D drawing. Klaar Valkhoff walks along the border between the reality and her drawings. Lotte Geeven's China thoughts is fragile so she wants to visit China again - maybe again and again... Manni Krak wants to make a robot. Maria Zervou makes her drawings with ¡°blank¡±. The girl Marinke Marcelis, who is doodling almost every day on her notebook, wants doodle once on a whole wall. Maurice van Daalen shows you how patient he can be with his pencil and paper on his fantasy. By seeing her drawing installation, you can imagine that Mees de Jong must be wielding her arms when she is speaking. Richtje Reinsma is wondering if you would dare to lick her drawing for almost all senses. Rogier Roeters works sometimes with his heart and sometimes with his brain. I expect he would work with his balls. Maybe it is better not to say anything when you look to Rossano & Leyendekker's photographic paintings and maybe you need to have a magnifier for Sang Woo Kang's tiny little world on paper. His mind can be so free when he is concentrating on his table. Sandra Kunz started her works with her body sculptures and developed with photographic results and finally had them translated into realistic oil paintings in a Chinese painting factory - "made in China"! Where do you really want to go, Sibylle Eimermacher? For Simone Hooymans, the world in itself seems cool, calm, weightless, emotionless¡ Stevens Vaughn considers himself as an animal but I know he has also an elegant sense. And he always trys to feed you up with plenty of food and beer. Su Tomesen saw the light(s) when rethinking drawing. Wouter Klein Velderman wrote in his proposal, ¡°Tim, I think my work 'Ramkraak' fits perfectly in your exhibition. I hope this proposal is surprisingly for you!¡± Well well¡ I could be gladder if the visitors of the exhibition would be surprised. Weina painted a silent moment with her camera while another Chinese girl Yang Zhifei is still having a daydream in Amsterdam about her wonderful rainbow. Let's see how Yasser Ballemans translates a doodle into 3D form. Anna Volkova "designed" her paintings with polyurethane - look carefully!... TOM (The One-Minute) presents ten pieces of One Minute "video paintings". They were made by: Mizin, Anja Masling, Freek WILLEMS, Thomas MOHR, Aimilia Mouzaki, Jason Dee, Elad Larom, Arno Coenen, Anssi Pulkkinen, Thierry Mandon. (26-March-2007) Auctions in the Post CS building Amsterdam The project W139/BASEMENT aims to pave the way for artists and art collectors towards the art market and focus on works of art with a market value of up to €1.000,- According to this, the project W139/BASEMENT will include art auctions which take place on the last Sunday of every month (March, April, May and June). Part of the collection will be sold by auctions. Consequently, the exhibition ¡°one; & the other painting¡± also put a number of artwork for the auction at its finish, 29 April 2007. The artist/curator determines the starting bid with a minimum of €5,- and a maximum of €850,-. An artist who exhibits at ¡±one; & the other painting¡± follows his/her own will to put one or several pieces of artwork for auction ¨C no matter the work(s) is exhibited or not. For each art work sold, W139/BASEMENT charges a commission of 10%, leaving further transaction details to the buyer and seller. Artists keep the ownership of their unsold work. Supported & sponsored: Sandberg Instituut The Sandberg Institute finances the organizing and general construction, and the making of the invitation for the opening. And the Sandberg Institute provides universal equipment. Atrists take care of the making and the installing of their own works. Great thanks to: Marjo van Baar and her husband, Nancy van Vooren, Ineke Bakker, Ivo van Stiphout, Jos Houweling, Yang Zhifei, Anky Van De Heijden, Sandra Kunz, Jurrian van den Haak, Jana van Meerveld, Adrian Adler Petersen, Marc Schoneveld, Tony Hofman, and Sandberg Instituut. Without their great efforts, especially the all-sided coordination of Marjo van Baar, this project would not have been done so properly.
